Today it only takes about six hours to reach Chau Doc by road. The 250 kilometre road to Chau Doc is a relatively easy drive from Sai Gon and along the way you will find the names of the mountains, rivers, and peoples posted on historical markers.

In the year 1757 Chau Doc was placed on the map of “Dai Viet”.Chau Doc Tan Cuong of “the new land at the border gate”was found 250 years ago and has collected many different cultures. It is the palce where the Mekong River Delta enters Vietnam and brings prosperity to southern Vietnam.

Many people often think of Sam Mountain when talking about Chau Doc.It is 5 kilometres away from the centres of Chau Doc.Sam Mountain is at a height of 200 metres. The name comes from its shape which reminds one of a limuloid. There are many temples and pagodas on the top of the mountain including the temple of Ba Chua Xu(the Local Goddess).

Whenever we come to Chau Doc,we usually climb up to the Sam Moutain. The path up Sam Mountain is spacious and easy to navigate. In the rainy season, many wild flowers blossom along the roadside especially the Tigon flower.Along the mountain side, there are many inns offering tourists water, soft drinks and instant noodles.Tourist can rest on the hammocks free of charge.

Ba Chua Xu temple lies at the foot of Sam Mountain.Though its style is simple, the temple is highly revered and sacred to southern residents of Vietnam.People often come to Ba Chua Xu temple to pray for happiness, peace and prosperity. The worship at Ba Chua Xu by Vietnamese has been influenced by different religions of ethnic groups such as the Cham,Chinese,Khmer and other groups who reside in the Mekong River Delta.

Oppsite Ba Chua Xu temple is the tomb of Ong(or the tomb of Nguyen Van Thoai or Royal Delegate Count Thoai Ngoc Hau).Thoai Ngoc Hau was the pride of Chau Doc and Ha Tien people because he managed the construction of two canals:Thoai Ha canal connecting Dong Xuyen and Reach Gia and Vinh Te Ha canal connecting CHau Doc and Ha Tien. The canals created solid foundations for the discovery of new land and setting up sovereignty for the Vietnamese people in the early 19th century.

Chau Doc has not only Sam Mountain,Ba Chua Xu temple, the tomb of Ong but also the floating villages,Cham cathedrals, the markets at the border gate, modern highways, the national borders and new bridges.
