Vietnam is still not a recognisable destination for Japanese travellers even though Vietnam’s tourist statistics place Japan among its 12 source markets according to a JTB Corporation travel specialist, Katsumi Shimizu. Speaking at seminar after the ITE travel show, she recommended Vietnam should open a tourist representative office in Japan and take advantage of the internet to build awarenes.

Vietnam also has to reach out to non-English speaking Japanese tourists when using internet promotional tools. She added: “It is imperative to lean Japanese tourist behavior travel. They go for cultural heritage and history while shopping and food are very important factors that gain their attention.” Language is another issue and as long as countries promote in English rather than Japanese they are not going to make much headway, she argued.

Vietnam National Administration of Tourism reports that during January to July, there were 268,491 Japanese visitors to Vietnam increasing 11.74% from 240,284 visits during the same period last year.
