HCMC – Nha Trang Sea Festival 2011 kicked off in the central coast province of Khanh Hoa under the theme of ‘Nha Trang-the Sea Rendezvous’ on Saturday with its goal to attract tourists and introduce economic and cultural potentials to the world.

The fifth festival will take place until Wednesday with over 60 activities in three places, including the beaches along Tran Phu Street, Nha Trang City, Bai Dai in Cam Lam District and Doc Let in Ninh Hoa Town. It features activities such as a Cau Ngu (fish worshipping) ceremony, a sculpture camp, a children’s festival, a seminar on sea preservation, national beach football championships and a street festival. There are also art performances and firework displays at the opening and closing ceremonies.

This year, there will be activities on Truong Sa (Spratly) and Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelagos with a film festival, seminar and photo exhibition.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Le Xuan Than, vice chairman of Khanh Hoa Province, said the province would like to highlight environmental protection to everybody through the theme. “It requires much effort to make Nha Trang a green pearl, especially after Nha Trang Bay has been recognized as one of the most beautiful bays in the world.”

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan also stressed the importance of the maritime economy of Vietnam. The festival is a chance to popularize policies in sea economic development and protection of Vietnam’s sovereignty, Nhan said.

The festival also provides an opportunity for the public to show the determination and responsibility for protecting the sovereignty of the country’s territorial waters and islands.
