Cat Tien National Park in the southern province of Dong Nai has been officially titled a world biosphere reserve by UNESCO, the park managers said Sunday.

In the official notice sent to the park managers, the United Nations organization refers to the park as the Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve, news website VnExpress said in a report.

Cat Tien is home to around 1,700 precious plants, including those in the large genus of Dalbergia; and more than 700 species of animals and birds, several of which are listed in the Red Book.

Eleven ethnic minority groups live around the park.

Vietnam currently has 58 nature reserves and eight UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserves.
